The WWF Baltic Sea Programme (BSP) is a regional programme working across borders to restore and protect one of the world’s most unique and sensitive marine ecosystems: the Baltic Sea. Since its launch in 1992, the Programme has united organizations around the Baltic Sea to secure a well-managed, biodiverse, and resilient sea - for the benefit of both people and nature.
WWF BSP brings together expertise and action from seven WWF offices and partner environmental organizations in Sweden, Finland, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Latvia and Estonia. Together, the Programme works to:
- Restore and protect marine and coastal ecosystems, focusing on habitat recovery, biodiversity enhancement, and effective implementation of the EU Nature Restoration Law in the region.
- Promote sustainable land use and agriculture, including wetland restoration, to reduce nutrient runoff and tackle eutrophication - one of the most serious threats to the Baltic Sea.
- Advance sustainable fisheries and marine governance to ensure marine resources are managed responsibly and equitably, while supporting species recovery and climate resilience.
- Influence policy at national, regional and EU levels, advocating for stronger environmental regulations and effective implementation of existing commitments. This includes acting as an observer to HELCOM - the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission.
BSP has a multidisciplinary team with expertise in marine biology, landscape and freshwater ecology, agriculture, policy, anthropology, communications and management. The Programme is not only a hub for conservation and policy action but also a platform for collaboration, learning, and innovation.
Our team is made up of a Director, programme management, experts in seascape, fisheries and landscape, and communication specialists all at different points in their careers.
Together, we can turn the tide for the Baltic Sea. Visit wwfbaltic.org for more.
